Chipper's back: Braves activate Jones from DL

MINNEAPOLIS -- Chipper Jones was activated from the disabled
list by the Atlanta Braves before their game Wednesday at
Minnesota, where he was likely to DH to give his bruised hands more
rest.

To make room on the roster, right-handed reliever Blaine Boyer
was optioned to Triple-A Richmond. Boyer had a 3.38 ERA in five
appearances.

Jones was first hurt in a collision with Pittsburgh's Jose
Bautista on May 11 while running to third base. He missed four
games, returned for a week and was then placed on the DL because of
pain between his thumbs and wrists.

Taking advantage of AL rules at the Metrodome, Atlanta manager
Bobby Cox said Jones would probably DH throughout the week. Jones
was batting .300 with 12 homers and 27 RBIs at the time of the
injury.

Shortstop Edgar Renteria, who missed Tuesday night's game
against the Twins because of a bruised left hand, also returned to
the lineup and was batting third. Renteria was hurt when Chicago
Cubs starter Ted Lilly hit him with a pitch in the first inning of
Sunday's game.
