Reds recall Encarnacion from Triple-A, send Hamilton to DL

CINCINNATI -- The Cincinnati Reds recalled third baseman
Edwin Encarnacion from Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday and put
ailing outfielder Josh Hamilton on the 15-day disabled list.

The 24-year-old Encarnacion took over third base last season,
but struggled this year, batting only .218 with one home run while
committing six errors. Optioned to Louisville, he hit .413 with
three home runs, two doubles and seven RBIs in 11 games.

Hamilton got sick after the opening game of a series in
Cleveland last Friday. He went to a hospital there and was
diagnosed with an inflamed digestive tract.

He was in uniform for Monday night's game with Washington, but
felt weak and was unsuccessful in lobbying manager Jerry Narron to
play on his 26th birthday. He was placed on the disabled list with
gastroenteritis retroactive to Saturday.

Hamilton wasn't at the ballpark on Tuesday. He was scheduled to
see a specialist about his digestive tract problems on Wednesday.

"With all of the pain he had last weekend, we thought it would
be best to be examined, see what the doctor says and go from
there," Narron said. "We'll give him a little bit of a break
here."

Hamilton, who made the Reds as a rookie after missing three
years of baseball because of crack cocaine and alcohol dependence,
is batting .261 with eight homers and 18 RBIs in 37 games.
