Spurs go the distance against the Suns

This playoff series lived up to its billing, going the distance as San Antonio won a tightly-contested seventh game by three points to punch its ticket to the Western Conference finals.

The Spurs won the opener in Phoenix, but the Suns bounced back in Game 2 to tie the series as Steve Nash followed his 31-point performance in the first game with a 25-point, 13-assist effort, while Amare Stoudemire added 24 points for the Suns in a 110-101 win. The series then moved to San Antonio, where Tim Duncan asserted his will in a fairly easy win in Game 3, scoring 32 points and pulling down 13 boards in a 102-89 win. Tony Parker scored 25 and contributed 10 assists in the win.

Phoenix regained the home-court edge in Game 4, however, winning 113-109 as Stoudemire had 28 points and Shawn Marion scored 25, with Nash handing out 14 assists. The Suns capitalized on their momentum to cruise in Game 5, 116-97, putting them within a game of the series as Nash again had an all-around gem of a game with 23 points, 12 assists, and eight boards.

San Antonio tightened defensively, however, and won Game 6 on its home court in an ugly 92-87 contest that saw 51 total fouls and three technicals called. Duncan had 22 to lead the Spurs, while Parker added 18 and dished nine assists. Returning home, the Suns had the edge for the final game, but Duncan got the best of Stoudemire down low (28 points to 18) and Parker pushed his game above Nash's, handing out 13 assists to 11 for Nash. Still, the game was close all the way to the wire, before Bruce Bowen hit a layup and a free throw and Duncan added two free throws to give the Spurs the 97-93 edge they needed to win the series.
