Big East founder Dave Gavitt hospitalized

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Former Big East commissioner Dave Gavitt
remained hospitalized Saturday after falling ill at the NCAA South
Region tournament at Rupp Arena.

Gavitt, 69, was working as an analyst for Westwood One radio
during Thursday's first round games when he was taken to University
of Kentucky Medical Center, according to Jim Host, who was keeping
stats for Gavitt during the game.

Gavitt worked the first two games of the Thursday session when
he complained about not feeling well. A doctor who looked at Gavitt
between sessions recommended Gavitt go to the hospital.

Host said Gavitt should be released in the next few days, but
was not expected to work for the remainder of the tournament.

Gavitt helped found the Big East Conference in 1979 and served
as the conference's commissioner until 1990. He was inducted into
the Basketball Hall of Fame last year. The trophy given to the
winner of the Big East men's basketball tournament is named in his
honor.
