VERO BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Brad Penny struggled through three innings, but the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Washington Nationals 10-9 Sunday.
Penny gave up four runs, nine hits and two walks without striking out a batter.
"Results I don't care about right now, I just want to make sure I am healthy and getting work on some of my pitches," he said.
Jeff Kent hit a two-run homer in the first and Larry Bigbie drove in the winning run with a bases-loaded single. Bigbie is batting .285 after starting spring training with three homers in the first two games.
"Anytime you get in a situation where you have a chance to win a ballgame, you get some butterflies. But I was just looking for something I could hit and try to get to the outfield for a sac fly," Bigbie said.
The teams combined for 32 hits.
Nationals starter Chris Michalak allowed two runs and four hits with two walks in 2 1-3 innings.
"As far as the outing went, I was pleased with it," Michalak said. "I accomplished what I wanted to, and that was to throw more strikes."
Chris Schroder took the loss, yielding three runs and four hits in one-third of an inning.
Dodgers right-hander Elmer Dessens got the win. He gave up a home run to Ronnie Belliard in the top of the ninth.
