Seton Hall-Louisville Preview

A successful February put Louisville in position to return to the NCAA tournament after missing out last season.

The 16th-ranked Cardinals hope to stay hot in March, starting Sunday when they host Seton Hall in a Big East matchup to close out the regular season.

Louisville (21-8, 11-4) has won five straight after starting last month with consecutive defeats. The run has helped the Cardinals earn a spot in the Top 25 for the first time this season, and likely secured a trip back to the NCAA tournament after they played in the NIT in 2005-06.

The Cardinals finished 33-5 and reached the Final Four in 2004-05, but went 21-13 last season.

Louisville won 76-69 at Connecticut last Sunday for its ninth victory in 11 contests, and clinched a first-round bye in next week's Big East tournament. The Cardinals shot 48.4 percent from the field and are making 50.0 percent of their shots during the five-game win streak.

"I think we're in," coach Rick Pitino said. "There has never been an 11-4 team not get in to the NCAA coming out of the Big East."

While the Cardinals will honor their four seniors Sunday, it's been the play of their freshmen and sophomores that has paced the team.

Sophomore forward Terrence Williams had 17 points and seven rebounds against Connecticut, while freshmen Derrick Caracter and Earl Clark combined for 27 points and 13 boards.

Williams leads the Cardinals with 12.1 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, with freshman Edgar Sosa second at 10.6 points a contest. Caracter, who averages 8.2 points and 4.2 rebounds, has managed to stick with the program despite being suspended twice by Pitino for issues on and off the court.

"We have made up our minds that he's either going to be a player, or he's got to pack it in and go home," Pitino said. "Never once did he say, 'I'm going to leave.' ... He just kept saying, 'I'm wrong, this is the place for me. I'm sticking it out.' He's never once wavered on that. That's why he's here today."

Seton Hall (13-15, 4-11), which has dropped nine of 11, was eliminated from Big East tournament contention with a 70-67 overtime defeat at Cincinnati on Wednesday. The Pirates lost their eighth straight away from home and are 0-7 on the road in conference play.

Freshman Eugene Harvey had 24 points on 8-for-17 shooting against the Bearcats. He leads the Pirates in scoring with 16.5 points per game.

This is the first meeting between these schools since Louisville joined the conference last season. The Cardinals lead the all-time series 6-3, including an 80-71 win on Dec. 10, 2003, in the last meeting.
