Wyoming conducting review of game fight

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- The University of Wyoming is conducting its own inquiry into a fight near the end of the Wyoming-New Mexico basketball game Tuesday night in Albuquerque.

Two Wyoming players and one New Mexico player were ejected as a result of the fight.

"We are in the process of reviewing all of the available video evidence surrounding the events of last night's game at New Mexico," UW athletic director Tom Burman said in a statement released by the university Wednesday. "We also have had discussions with head coach Steve McClain and officials at the Mountain West Conference in an effort to gather as much information as possible."

Burman said UW and the conference hope to have reviewed all of the information by Thursday.

Under NCAA rules, players who are ejected during a game are automatically suspended for the next game. A conference can add to the suspension but not overturn it.

Kim Melcher, MWC associate commissioner, said she wasn't sure if the league would impose additional penalties.

The statement also said Cowboy basketball practices would be closed and players would not be available for interviews through the remainder of the week.

The fight occurred with 1:10 left to go in the game, which New Mexico won 91-83.

McClain declined to comment on the fight after the game; New Mexico coach Ritchie McKay said he didn't see what happened.

It began when Wyoming guard Brandon Ewing, the league's leading scorer, became entangled with New Mexico guard Jamaal Smith. As players from both teams converged, UW guard Brandon Jones shoved New Mexico guard J.R. Giddens, and Smith threw a punch at Jones.

The automatic one-game suspension means the Cowboys will be without Ewing and Jones when they play at Air Force (No. 16 ESPN/USA Today, No. 17 AP) on Saturday. The two guards account for 48 percent of Wyoming's scoring this season, 51 percent of its 3-point shooting, 45 percent of its steals and 63 percent of the team's free throws and assists.
