Sacramento State tabs Sperbeck as new head coach

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State introduced Marshall
Sperbeck as its new head football coach on Saturday afternoon.

Sperbeck, who spent 15 successful years as head coach at
Foothill College in Los Altos, is now the ninth football coach in
Sac State history. A native of Sacramento, Sperbeck beat out 65
other candidates who were vying for the position.

"I will work hard and I will find a way to get this thing done.
I want to be successful here and get these guys on that same
page," Sperbeck said at a standing-room-only press conference.

Sperbeck led the Foothill Owls to a 109-53 overall record,
including 11 bowl-game appearances. After posting a 10-1 record
this past season, Foothill beat nearby Sierra College 24-0 in the
Silicon Valley Bowl.

Known for having a high-powered offense in California junior
college athletics, the Owls scored at least 40 points in seven of
10 regular season games in 2006 and averaged 478.8 total offensive
yards per game.

Sperbeck replaces Steve Mooshagian, who had an 11-33 overall
record in four years, including a 4-7 mark in 2006. Sac State
decided not to renew Mooshagian's contract, opting for a national
search to replace the former Cincinnati Bengals receivers coach.

"Coach Sperbeck has demonstrated a devotion to his players and
has a strong sense of the importance of academics," said Sac State
President Dr. Alex Gonzalez, who was actively involved in the
search.

"He can recruit student-athletes, and then develop their skills
and abilities once they join the team. He also talks about
preparation, discipline, and commitment. And I believe that his
approach will be a successful one for Hornet football."

Now, the new Hornet coach is focused on meeting current team
members and recruiting new players.

"Right now, it's one day at a time," Sperbeck said. "That's the
way I approach my life, that's the way I go about my business, and
that's the way I coach my football team."
