Cowboys' offense sputtering

What has happened to Tony Romo and the Cowboys offense? Until the last few weeks, this QB and offensive unit was one of the hottest in the NFL. The Cowboys have abandoned the running game too early in games and have made the mistake of putting the game in the hands of a young quarterbacks instead of allowing him to be a part of the offense. They have a good one-two punch at running back in Julius Jones and Marion Barber that has forced teams to keep a safety close to the line of scrimmage to stop the run. This has allowed Romo to work the outside passing lanes with Terry Glenn and Terrell Owens. However, by abandoning the run they give the initiative to the defense.

The Cowboys are 0-5 when they fail to run the ball more than 20 times in a game. When failing to establish the run, they become one dimensional and easy for the opposing team to call defenses against. On the other hand, when their running backs have more than 20 touches, it gives them a more balanced attack. Running the football eats up the clock and keeps the opposing teams offense off the field which is good thing when your defense is struggling.
