NCAA BASKETBALL: OHIO STATE AT FLORIDA
Stephen C. O'Connell Center, Gainesville, Fla.

This is one of biggest games of the early season -- and perhaps a preview of the 2007 NCAA Final Four: No. 5 Florida, the defending NCAA champs, vs. No. 4 Ohio State, in Gainesville's Stephen C. O'Connell Center (Gale Lemerand Dr.). Two big men who could possibly go 1-2 in the 2007 NBA Draft -- Ohio State's Greg Oden and Florida's Joakim Noah -- will battle inside.

UNDERCARD

Fri., Dec. 22

NBA: ROCKETS AT SPURS
AT&T Center, San Antonio

San Antonio, behind Tim Duncan and Tony Parker (who is playing inspired ball, perhaps because of the support of his fiancé, Eva Longoria), is off to a hot start. But so is division rival Houston. No big surprise, given their stars -- Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady. The teams have played once this year, with the Spurs winning, 92-84 in Houston. This time they meet at San Antonio's AT&T Center (1 AT&T Center Parkway). Payback time, anyone?

Do: First stop: the Alamo (300 Alamo Plaza, Web site), where in 1836 Texans made a heroic (if doomed) stand against Mexican general Santa Anna's army in their battle for independence. Then amble the 2.6-mile River Walk (Web site), a pair of quiet pathways alongside either side of the meandering San Antonio River. You'll pass a cornucopia of downtown galleries, shops, hotels and restaurants.

Stay: The price is right. Stay downtown at the 4-star Sheraton Gunter Hotel San Antonio (205 E. Houston St.), where rooms start at $119, or the 4-star Emily Morgan Hotel (705 E. Houston St.), with rooms from $147.

Eat: Boudro's Texas Bistro on the Riverwalk (421 E. Commerce St., Web site) is where to go for Louisiana/Texas-style seafood and steaks. Order the center-cut strip sirloin or the Gulf yellowfin tuna.

Thu., Dec. 21

WASHINGTON, D.C. FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials/Washington Monument

What better time to visit our nation's capital than at holiday season, to give thanks? These three monuments, artful as they are, are moving for what they represent: the liberty and justice for which these presidents fought. Inscribed in the Lincoln Memorial's (National Mall & Memorial Parks, Web site) limestone walls are his Gettysburg Address and Second Inaugural Address. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech beneath it.
The Jefferson Memorial (National Mall & Memorial Parks, Web site) held such meaning for President Franklin D. Roosevelt, he ordered all trees between the White House and the Monument cut down so he could gaze upon Jefferson through his window.
Take an elevator to the top of the Washington Monument (National Mall & Memorial Parks, Web site). The panoramic view of the city is spectacular.
For some sports, head to the Verizon Center (601 F St. NW) on Sat., Dec. 23 to see Georgetown, behind F Jeff Green and G Jonathan Wallace, take on Navy and G Greg Sprink.

INTERNATIONAL PICK

Sat., Dec. 23

Dine in the Balti Triangle (formed by the Sparkbrook, Balsall Heath and Moseley neighborhoods in South Birmingham).
