Wake Forest 73, Elon 48

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) -- Kyle Visser had 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead Wake Forest to a 73-48 victory over Elon on Friday night.

Michael Drum added 13 points for Wake Forest (3-0), which never trailed, shot nearly 46 percent and overcame 30 points from LeVonn Jordan to cruise to its 23rd consecutive victory over the Phoenix.

Visser, the only Demon Deacon who played on the Chris Paul-led team that reached No. 1 two seasons ago, had his third consecutive dominant game -- even if it was his season-low point total.

The 6-foot-11 Visser -- who set a personal best with 23 points in the opener against James Madison, then surpassed it with 26 at Bucknell -- presented matchup problems all night long for Elon, which doesn't have a player taller than 6-9.

The Phoenix (1-2) tried to rally early in the second half, cutting the Demon Deacons' lead to 10 on Brett James' layup with 17:32 left.

But Wake Forest responded by scoring nine straight to open up a 43-24 lead, and Elon didn't get closer than 13 the rest of the way.

Kevin Swinton had 11 points for the Demon Deacons.

Jordan was 10-of-15 from the field, but the Phoenix couldn't get production from almost anyone else -- only three other Elon players scored.

The Demon Deacons tried to take undersized Elon out of this one almost from the opening tip by pounding the ball inside, dominating the boards and puzzling the Phoenix with their half-court defense.

At one point in the first half, Elon was just 3-of-17 shooting -- with those field goals coming on two layups and a goaltending call on the Demon Deacons.

Wake Forest held the Phoenix without a field goal for the opening 6 1/2 minutes, scored the first nine points during a 14-2 run and cruised to a 32-18 halftime lead.

Freshman point guard Ishmael Smith's driving layup with 4:08 left before halftime gave the Demon Deacons their largest lead of the half at 29-12.

Wake Forest leads the series with Elon 35-6 and hasn't lost to the Phoenix since 1922.
