Comes from a rodeo family in which is brother, Mark, competed in the bareback riding until 2002 when a neck injury forced him to retire. Marvin's nephew, J.D. Garrett Jr., currently competes in the bareback riding along with Marvin's son, Weston. Weston broke his leg in 2006 causing him to miss much of the year
In 1998, he was on his way to his last rodeo of the year when the plane he was riding in crashed. Marvin, along with brother, Mark, Scott Johnston and Thad Bothwell, were on the plane
When Marvin was in fourth grade he told his teacher he wanted to be a cowboy when he grew up. To prove it, he began riding steers when he was 12. At the age of 15 he wanted to be a bull rider but his mother put a stop to that and said he could not be a bull rider until he could sign his own association permit. However, she did allow him to ride bareback horses and he soon forgot all about bull riding
He was an All-State and All-American wrestler in 1982 and received wrestling scholarship offers from Iowa and North Dakota but he also received rodeo scholarships from Wyoming and North Dakota, so he decided to pursue that path.
