Trammell hired as Cubs bench coach

CHICAGO -- Alan Trammell, fired last year as the manager of
the Detroit Tigers, was hired Monday as the Chicago Cubs' bench
coach for Lou Piniella.

"My wish was to get back on the field and Lou called me with
this great opportunity," Trammell said. "This came together very
quickly. I'm thrilled it did because Lou has had a lot of success
and he's a good man."

Trammell, a six-time All-Star shortstop during his playing
career with the Tigers, agreed to a two-year deal. Piniella, hired
a week ago, had already retained pitching coach Larry Rothschild.

The 48-year-old Trammell spent his 20-year big league career
with the Tigers from 1977-1996 and batted .285 with 185 home runs
and 1,003 RBIs in 2,293 games.

While managing the Tigers from 2003-2005, Trammell compiled a
186-300 record, including a 43-119 mark his first season.
Previously he was the first-base coach for the San Diego Padres
from 2000-2002.
