Friday mailbag

Lots of reaction to this week's Hot 100 list as well as some questions about the controversial calls in recent games.

From Holly in Pasadena: First it was Oregon-Oklahoma and now USC-Washington. Does the Pac-10 really have the worst officials?

Feldman: I'm not sure. They certainly have had the two most high-profile mishaps this season, although schools actually send in reports to their conference offices all the time about supposed blown calls. Sometimes they get apologies, but it often never becomes public. A coaching buddy of mine in the SEC explained that he thinks the instant replay system is making worse officials. He says now the refs are so gun-shy about being exposed by the replay system, and in the process national TV, that they are hesitating and over-thinking. The more games I watch on TV, the more I buy what he is saying.
