Slaton runs wild as West Virginia tops Maryland

MORGANTOWN, West Virginia -- Steve Slaton wasted no
time showing the Maryland Terrapins exactly what they are
missing.

Slaton sparked a 28-point first quarter with a pair of
electrifying touchdown runs as fifth-ranked West Virginia rolled
to a 45-24 victory over the Terrapins.

Slaton originally committed to Maryland as a high school senior
but had the scholarship offer rescinded by the Terrapins, who
already had a stockpile of running backs.

Maryland may have had a quantity of backs, but no one of the
quality of Slaton, who set the tone Thursday with a big first
quarter. Slaton had TD runs of 38 and 37 yards in the opening
period, and even his mistakes turned out fine.

After his 52-yard run gave West Virginia (3-0) a first-and-goal
at the Maryland 2, he fumbled into the end zone on the next
play. But Brad Palmer jumped on the loose ball for a TD to give
the Mountaineers a 28-0 lead after 15 minutes.

West Virginia finished with 381 yards, 338 of which came on the
ground. The Mountaineers rolled up 230 of their yards in the
first-quarter outburst.

Slaton finished with 195 yards and two TDs on 21 carries.

Coming off back-to-back 5-6 campaigns, Maryland (2-1) started
its season with a 27-14 victory over Division I-AA William &
Mary and a 24-10 triumph over Middle Tennessee State last
weekend.

The Mountaineers presented an obvious step up in class for the
Terrapins, who never threatened after the first quarter.

Sam Hollenbach completed 24-of-45 passes for 217 yards and two
TDs. He was intercepted twice.

West Virginia has won each of the last three meetings with
Maryland.
