NEW YORK -- The Minnesota Twins didn't waste any time after acquiring Phil Nevin, starting him at designated hitter against the New York Yankees on Friday night.

Nevin went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts and two walks in Minnesota's 8-1 loss. He was dealt to the Twins late Thursday night for a player to be named, and the Chicago Cubs gave the Twins $1,359,860 to cover part of the $1,693,989 remaining in his $10 million salary.

"Veteran hitter, middle of the lineup-type thing there," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "We just want him to be himself and put some good swings on the ball and maybe drive in a few runs here and there. Kind of another leader-type guy around some young hitters."

Nevin will also see time at first base.

"The one thing I haven't been able to do is really give [Justin] Morneau many breaks over there," Gardenhire said.

The 35-year-old Nevin, joining his seventh team in 12 major-league seasons, said goodbye to his former Cubs teammates at Wrigley Field on Friday morning.

"You always hope you get in a situation where you have a chance to play in October," Nevin said.

He was acquired by the Cubs from Texas on May 31 and hit .274 with 12 homers and 33 RBI in 179 at-bats for Chicago.

"Playing out here in front of these fans is unbelievable. It's something I'll never forget," he said.
