NAPLES, Italy -- Thomas Lurz of Germany and Larisa Ilchenko
of Russia won the 5-kilometer races Tuesday at the open-water
swimming world championships. Lurz swam Naples' bay course in 1 hour, 4 minutes, 32 seconds,
edging Charles Peterson of the United States by four-tenths of a
second. Simone Ercoli of Italy was third. Ilchenko won the women's race in 1 hour, 8 minutes, 19 seconds,
beating second-place Poliana Okimoto of Brazil by seven seconds.
Britta Kamrau-Corestein came third, 27 seconds behind the Russian.
