WASHINGTON -- The Washington Nationals unconditionally
released outfielder Luis Matos after Thursday night's 9-6 loss to
Florida, and plan to recall right-hander Jason Bergmann from
Triple-A New Orleans. Bergmann is expected to join the Nationals on Friday, and start
against the New York Mets on Saturday. Matos signed with the Nationals as a free agent July 14, and
appeared in 14 games, batting 3-for-15 (.200). "They just decided it didn't work out. So I move on," Matos
said. "I know something's going to come along better." He made one start, and was 2-for-10 as a pinch-hitter. "He didn't fit the role that he's playing here right now,
coming off the bench, pinch hitting," manager Frank Robinson said. Bergmann is 8-2 with four saves and a 3.28 ERA in 26 appearances
at New Orleans this season. He began the year as a reliever but
recently was shifted to the rotation, going 3-1 with a 3.63 ERA in
four starts. He's been with the Nationals twice earlier this season, going
0-0 with an 8.14 ERA in 17 relief appearances.
