Jets sign fourth overall pick T Ferguson

HEMPSTEAD, New York - The New York Jets on Wednesday
night signed offensive tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson, the fourth
overall pick in April's draft.

Terms were not disclosed.

Getting to camp on time was essential for Ferguson, who is
expected to start at left tackle in his rookie campaign.
Veterans for the Jets report to camp Friday.

The 6-6, 312-pound Ferguson started 49 of 51 games at left
tackle at Virginia. The Long Island native was coached by
former Jets coach Al Groh in college.

"We are extremely pleased D'Brickashaw and his representatives
understand the importance of practicing with his teammates as
camp begins," Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum said. "This
was a constructive process as both sides were proactive
throughout the negotiations."

Many scouts have looked at Ferguson as a franchise left tackle,
but others believe he doesn't quite measure up to the likes of
Tony Boselli and Jonathan Ogden.

Ferguson is the second top-five pick to sign, joining first
overall selection Mario Williams of Houston. The North
Carolina State defensive end signed a six-year, $54 million
contract before the draft.

Center Nick Mangold, the Jets' second first-round pick, remains
unsigned. The Ohio State product was taken 29th overall.
