Schnyder's defense remains on track at Cincy event

MASON, Ohio -- Defending champion Patty Schnyder of
Switzerland advanced to the second round of the Western & Southern
Financial Group Women's Open on Monday, rallying to beat Lilia
Osterloh 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (1).

The top-seeded Schnyder overcame a 4-1 deficit in the third set
and fought off a match point at 5-4 before breaking Osterloh to tie
it. Schnyder ended the tiebreaker with a hard serve that Osterloh
returned wide.

"It's a great feeling to come back," Schnyder said. "To get
out of that situation gives me confidence."

Osterloh, who lives in Columbus, double-faulted while serving
for the match in the 10th game of the third set.

"That is a missed opportunity, because I had the opportunity to
close it out," she said.

In other first-round matches, Amy Frazier beat Jessica Kirkland
6-3, 6-4, and Finland's Emma Laine defeated Austria's Sybille
Bammer 6-3, 6-1.

On Tuesday, Serena Williams will face second-seeded Anastasia
Myskina.
