Donovan, 31, played the last two-plus NHL seasons with the Calgary Flames, and last season had nine goals and 11 assists in 80 games. He had career bests of 18 goals and 24 assists in the 2003-04 season, when the Flames reached the Stanley Cup finals.

He has 94 goals and 103 assists in a 12-year career that includes time with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Atlanta Thrashers, Colorado Avalanche, and San Jose Sharks, who selected him in the
second round of the 1993 draft.

The native of Timmins, Ontario, also has five goals and six assists in 43 career playoff games.

"Shean is a good character guy," Bruins interim general manager Jeff Gorton said. "We feel he fits in well with what we are accomplishing with this team."

Donovan is Boston's third free agent signing. The Bruins, who are overhauling their roster after finishing last in the Northeast Division and out of the playoffs last season, made the biggest splash on the first day of free agency Saturday, signing defenseman Zdeno Chara to a five-year, $37.5 million deal, and center Marc Savard to a four-year, $20 million contract.
