Padres activate RHP Williams from DL

SAN DIEGO - After receiving a solid start from Mike
Thompson on Saturday, the San Diego Padres optioned the
righthanded pitcher to the minor leagues to make room for
veteran Woody Williams.

The Padres activated Williams off the 15-day disabled list
Saturday. The righthander will start the second game of a
day-night doubleheader against the San Francisco Giants.

Thompson allowed three runs and five hits in 6 1/3 innings of a
7-4 win by the Padres in the first game of the twinbill. He was
optioned to Class AAA Portland of the Pacific Coast League
after posting a 3-2 record with a 4.30 ERA in nine starts with
San Diego.

Williams was placed on the 15-day DL on May 13 with a strained
left calf. In eight games, including seven starts, he is 3-1
with a 3.27 ERA.
