Stubblefield to take coaching job in Cincinnati

LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- New Mexico State University assistant
basketball coach Tony Stubblefield has agreed to take an assistant
coaching position with the University of Cincinnati men's
basketball program, NMSU officials announced Thursday.

Stubblefield, who has been with the Aggies for six years and
served as interim head coach during the 2004-05 season, was
expected to sign a contract with the Bearcats this week.

Stubblefield will serve as one of the team's primary recruiters
and his coaching will focus on the backcourt.

"This was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to
make," he said. "I have had a great time at New Mexico State and
they have always treated me very well so it was definitely a
decision that took some time to make, but at the end of the day, I
just felt that this was a good move for me."

Last season, Stubblefield and the rest of the coaching staff
helped the Aggies to a 16-14 record, a vast improvement over the
6-24 finish the previous season. The 10-game improvement tied for
the fourth best turnaround in all of Division I men's basketball.

"NMSU is definitely on the move up," Stubblefield said, noting
the support of Coach Reggie Theus and the NMSU administration.

Stubblefield spent the previous five years with the Aggies under
former head coach Lou Henson. In 2004-05, he was named interim head
coach after Henson suffered an illness and then retired midway
through the year.

Stubblefield came to NMSU after four seasons as an assistant
coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of
Texas-Arlington.

He began his coaching career in 1994 as a student assistant
coach at his alma mater, Nebraska-Omaha. The following year,
Stubblefield served as an assistant coach at UT-San Antonio.

Stubblefield played at Clinton Community College in Iowa before
joining Nebraska-Omaha in 1991. He earned two letters at Omaha and
was the starting guard and team captain as a senior.
