BOSTON - Don Sweeney played in more than 1,000 games
for the Boston Bruins. Now he will try to help them as an
executive. The team named Sweeney as their director of player development,
interim general manager Jeff Gorton announced on Wednesday. Sweeney, 39, was a teammate of incoming Bruins general manager
Peter Chiarelli at Harvard University. Chiarelli has spent the
past seven seasons with the Ottawa Senators, including the last
two as assistant GM, and will take over the Bruins after
Saturday's NHL draft. Sweeney played in 1,052 games in 15 years with the Bruins and
was a member of the 1989-90 team that reached the Stanley Cup
Finals. He ranks third on the club's list for games played and
recorded 52 goals and 210 assists with Boston. Sweeney ended
his playing career with the Dallas Stars in 2003-04. This past season, Sweeney was a studio analyst for Bruins games
on New England Sports Network.
