Rangers hitting coach returning full-time after prostate cancer surgery

ARLINGTON, Texas - Texas Rangers hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo, who is recovering from prostate cancer surgery, will resume his duties full-time when the team goes on the road next week.

Manager Buck Showalter said Friday that Jaramillo will travel next Thursday when the Rangers leave for a 10-game trip to Chicago, Kansas City and Boston. Jaramillo has been working with the team in a limited capacity for a couple of weeks, and has already made one road trip.

That initial trip coincided with Jaramillo's checkup with his doctor in New York, where he had the surgery March 28. Jaramillo has been cleared as cancer free.

Jaramillo has been taking part in advance meetings and batting practice. During games, he remains in the clubhouse instead of the dugout.

Brook Jacoby, who has been filling in for Jaramillo since spring training, will return home to Arizona next week. He will take a few days off with his family before the amateur baseball draft.

The cancer was discovered when Jaramillo had his regular six-month checkup before spring training. He remained in New York for two weeks of recovery after surgery before returning home to Texas.

This is Jaramillo's 12th season with the Rangers. He is the only coach in team history to serve more than eight years on the major league staff.
