Hawks hire former La Salle star Overton as assistant

PHILADELPHIA -- Former La Salle standout Doug Overton joined
the staff of Saint Joseph's coach Phil Martelli on Tuesday.

Overton replaces Monte Ross, who left after 10 years with the
Hawks to become head coach at the University of Delaware. Overton
spent the past season as the director of player development for the
Philadelphia 76ers.

"I don't think there's a better place in the country to start,
under a great coach like Phil Martelli and with a great program
like Saint Joseph's. It makes it even sweeter that this opportunity
comes in my hometown," Overton said.

Overton led the Explorers to three consecutive NCAA tournament
appearances, averaging a team-high 22.3 points per game during his
senior season in 1991. He is the Explorers' career leader in
assists (671) and steals (277) and had an 11-year career in the
NBA.
