Pitching to Barry

I faced Barry Bonds and he was a different type of hitter, a different type of offensive player than what he's been the last five or six years. I'm not surprised at all that teams are still careful with Bonds because of what I saw of him in spring training. He was pretty much the same player we expected to see. But what I did see during the spring and from his first few games of the season is his right knee continues to bother him. He's in constant pain because of his right knee when he's playing.

How to pitch to Bonds can change from at-bat to at-bat. If I was a pitcher, I would watch how he runs in off the field just to see if he has an obvious hobble at the time. If his right knee is bothering him, then you should to pitch to the outside part of the plate when he bats because he has to have his legs to drive that pitch away. When his right knee is hurting and he just spreads out and uses his arms and hands, he has to have the ball middle in to usually do damage. When his right knee is feeling better, he can cover the plate like nobody in the history of this game.
