Kupets takes all-around title; No. 1 Georgia advances to Super Six

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Freshman Courtney Kupets won the all-around title and top-ranked Georgia advanced to the finals in the NCAA women's championships.

The Gym Dogs posted the best score of the day with a 197.275, winning the second session, and Iowa State (196.250) and Florida (196.225) finished second and third to advance the Friday's Super Six finals.

Nebraska, Alabama and Utah advanced earlier Thursday during the first session.

Kupets, the Southeastern Conference freshman of the year, came into the tournament as the nation's top gymnast in the all-around. She posted the day's top score of 9.950 on the beam, and had 9.9s on the bars and floor exercise en route to surpassing Utah's Ashley Postell for the all-around title.

Kupets and Georgia will compete for the team title Friday, and that's the crown she really covets.

"There's still a few little things I'd like to improve on by (tomorrow)," said Kupets, who represented Team USA in the 2004 Olympics.

The six-time champs entered the tournament as the prohibitive favorite, a point coach Suzanne Yoculan wasn't shy about making on Wednesday at the media session. She still likes her team's chances.

"I'm especially proud that we had a mistake on every event but it didn't rattle anyone," she said.

The Cyclones are making their first Super Six appearance.

"I think they did a really good job at coming back when they had a problem - they were really resilient," coach K.J. Kinder said.

Arizona State finished fourth in the second session with 195.575, host Oregon State finished fifth with 195.150, and Arkansas was sixth with 194.375.

Nebraska finished second overall at 196.325.

Emily Parsons led the vault and floor exercise competition in the first session as the Cornhuskers put up the best score.

Nebraska nipped Alabama 196.325 to 196.250 to take the top spot. Utah edged Michigan by 0.175 for third. Louisiana State was fifth and Oklahoma sixth.

Postell had the best all-around score in the early session, a 39.525, but Kupets moved past her with her 9.9 in the floor exercise.

LSU's April Burkholder (39.500) finished third.

Georgia's Kelsey Ericksen had the top score in the floor exercise with a 9.925; teammate Katie Heenan finished first on the bars with a 9.925; and Kristina Comforte of UCLA had a 9.950 in the vault.
