Longshots prevail in Meadowlands stakes

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Longshots prevailed in both featured stakes races at the Meadowlands Racetrack Friday night.

Pownal Bay Matt, sent off at odds of 32-1, was last at the top of the stretch, but closed five wide to win the $106,100 Matt's Scooter by a half-length over Real Mean Art. Pownal Bay Matt, a son of Matt's Scooter driven by Daniel Dube and trained by David Pinkney Jr., paced the mile in a lifetime best of 1:51.2.

He paid $66.20, $24.60 and $13.80. Real Mean Art returned $6 and $4, and Fox Valley Appeal, paid $4 to show.

In the companion feature, the $118,560 Overbid, Easton Alliance N won in a three-horse photo finish. The 15-1 longshot edged 4-5 favorite Loyal Opposition and 4-1 Burning Point by a neck.

The 5-year-old New Zealand-bred pacing mare, driven by John Campbell and trained by Ross Croghan, also ran a lifetime best, covering the mile in 1:51.1.

She paid $32.50, $5.80 and $2.40. Loyal Opposition returned $3 and $2.10 and Burning Point paid $2.40.
