SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) -- Stanley Burrell led Xavier with 20
points and Justin Doellman had 19 points and 12 rebounds as the
Musketeers beat Rhode Island 85-76 on Saturday night.
Justin Cage finished with 16 points while Josh Duncan chipped in
with 15 for Xavier. Freshman Johnny Wolf got the first start of his
career and finished with 10 points. Wolf was starting in the place
of Dedrick Finn, who was dismissed from the team this week.
Rhode Island (12-13, 6-8 Atlantic 10), which has now lost seven
of its last eight games, trailed by 16 points with 2:58 left, but
battled to within four points with 1:12 remaining.
Jimmy Baron, who tied a career high with 16 points, pulled Rhode
Island within 77-73 with a putback, but the Rams could not get any
closer.
Dawan Robinson led Rhode Island with 21 points and Jamaal Wise
added 16.
The game was tied 17-17 with 8:58 to play in the first half, but
Xavier (17-8, 8-6) outscored the Rams 21-9 to close the half.
Duncan's 3-pointer as time ran out gave Xavier a 38-26 halftime
lead.
Duncan's 3 was one of seven Xavier made in the first half. The
Musketeers finished 9-of-20 on three-pointers for the game.
