Carroll College QB Emmert named NAIA player of year

SAVANNAH, Tenn. -- Tyler Emmert of Carroll College has been named the 2005 Rawlings-NAIA national football player of the year.

This is the second time the quarterback has won the honor, having previously been named in 2003.

Emmert was selected to The Associated Press Little All-America team released Thursday.

He led the Saints to a perfect 13-0 season record and to the title game of the NAIA football championship series.

The senior enters his final game Saturday against St. Francis, Ind., 50-3 as a starter at the small private Catholic school in Helena, Mont.

A finalist for the coveted Draddy Trophy, Emmert had a record-setting season.

He has the NAIA record for total offense (13,681), including 4,228 this season. He's passed for 3,039 yards and 32 touchdowns and rushed for 1,189 yards and five more scores.

During his acceptance speech Friday, Emmert credited his teammates and Carroll College offensive coordinator Nick Howlett.

"I wasn't expecting to win the award, but I am grateful I did," he said. "It is a representation of Coach Howlett and the offensive line, not just the quarterback."

Emmert is the ninth person to receive the Rawlings-NAIA Player of the Year honor since the award was first presented in 1997.

He is the second player to receive the award twice. Eddie Eviston from Georgetown College, Ky., was a three-time winner in 1999, 2000 and 2001.
