Northern Iowa beats top-ranked New Hampshire in I-AA quarterfinals

DURHAM, N.H. -- Brian Wingert's 22-yard field goal early in
the fourth quarter gave Northern Iowa a 24-21 victory over
top-ranked New Hampshire in a Division I-AA quarterfinal game
Saturday.

The Panthers (10-3) play Texas State in next week's semifinals.

Wingert, who kicked a game-winning field goal with 51 seconds
left last week against Eastern Washington, hit his 22-yarder with
11:50 remaining. The kick was set up by a 21-yard pass from Eric
Sanders to Justin Surrency.

New Hampshire outgained the Panthers 631 yards to 351 but lost
three fumbles in the second half.

New Hampshire (11-2) fell behind 21-0 after 23 minutes, but
pulled even at the end of the third quarter as Ricky Santos threw
touchdowns passes of 29, 8 and 20 to David Ball.<
^Texas State 14, Cal Poly 7=

SAN MARCOS, Texas -- Douglas Sherman rushed for 125 yards
and a touchdown and quarterback Barrick Nealy had 264 total yards
and a score as Texas State beat Cal Poly.

Sherman's 5-yard touchdown late in the third quarter put Texas
State (11-2) ahead 14-0, and the Bobcats held on after James Noble
scored on an 8-yard run with 4:11 left in the game to pull the
Mustangs (9-4) without a touchdown.

Nealy, who put the Bobcats ahead to stay on a 17-yard run in the
first quarter, threw an 8-yard pass to Markee White on fourth-and-5
with under a minute remaining to clinch the victory.<
^Appalachian State 38, Southern Illinois 24=

BOONE, N.C. -- Richie Williams threw three touchdown passes
and ran for a fourth score, leading Appalachian State over Southern
Illinois.

Williams ran for a 1-yard touchdown with 5:13 remaining in the
first quarter to give the Mountaineers (10-3) a 10-0 lead. A
41-yard pass to Kevin Richardson with 11:50 to go in the second
quarter made it 17-0.

Appalachian State will play Furman in the semifinals next week.

All three of Williams' touchdown passes were for 40 or more
yards, and he finished the evening having completed 20 of 28 pass
attempts for 367 yards and no interceptions.

The Salukis' (9-4) first touchdown came when Craig Turner
returned the second-half kickoff for 93 yards to score. Joel
Sambursky threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Kellen Allen, making the
score 31-17 with 3:19 to play in the fourth quarter, but
Appalachian State countered with a 40-yard touchdown from Williams
to Dexter Jackson less than 30 seconds later.<
^Furman 24, Richmond 20=

RICHMOND, Va. -- Ingle Martin threw for 249 yards and Jerome
Felton scored two touchdowns as Furman held off Richmond.

The Spiders (9-4) saw their eight-game winning streak end when
Stacy Tutt's pass with 1:03 left in the game went incomplete. The
Paladins (11-2) took over on their own 25 and ran out the clock.

Martin finished 17-of-25 and became Furman's career leader with
5,513 passing yards and 42 touchdowns. Justin Stepp had a
career-high 11 receptions for 143 yards.

Tutt was 15-for-30 and 153 yards and ran for 102 yards on 18
carries.
