Buzzbait size

Bulk up on windy days for greater casting distance and control with buzzbaits.

Determine the proper buzz bait size by weighing the following variables:

1. Size of bass in the lake you're fishing. If bass seldom exceed 2 pounds, a 1/4-ounce buzzbait is usually best. Where bass grow bigger, use a larger buzzer.

2. Mood of bass. When bass are inactive and holding tight to cover, it usually takes a slow retrieve to tempt them into striking a buzzbait. Because large buzzers are heavier and sink faster, use a lighter buzz bait when the bite is slow.

3. Water temperature. At the beginning and end of buzzbait season, start off with smaller buzzers (usually 1/4 ounce, but sometimes as small as 1/8 ounce) in anticipation of less active fish in cool water.

4. Wind. If there's a breeze rippling the surface, use a larger buzzbait, which will make more noise and be easier for the bass to locate.
