LYON, France -- Top-seeded Andy Roddick beat French
qualifier Nicolas Mahut 7-6 (5), 6-3 in the second-round at the
Lyon Grand Prix on Thursday.
Roddick served 13 aces to advance to a quarterfinal meeting
against Mario Ancic, who beat Thomas Enqvist on Wednesday.
French teenager Gael Monfils upset third-seeded Gaston Gaudio of
Argentina 6-4, 6-3 to advance to a quarterfinal match with
countryman Marc Gicquel, who beat Italy's Davide Sanguinetti 6-3,
6-2.
The 19-year-old Monfils, who has one ATP career title, improved
to 23-21 overall but felt the match -- and 2004 French Open champion
Gaudio -- could have been better.
"I don't think it was a very good match," Monfils said.
"There wasn't much rhythm or intensity. Gaston (Gaudio) wasn't at
his best today either."
Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean beat fifth-seeded Tommy Robredo of
Spain 7-5, 6-3 and will next face Olivier Rochus of Belgium.
In other matches, Fabrice Santoro defeated fellow Frenchman
Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-1, 6-4 while American Vincent Spadea beat
Michael Llodra 6-4, 6-3.
