Thrashers sign Shields, send Garnett back to minors

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Thrashers signed goaltender Steve
Shields on Thursday and sent goalie Michael Garnett back to the
minors.

Goalie has been a position of concern for Atlanta with starter
Kari Lehtonen and backup Mike Dunham out with groin injuries. Also,
Pasi Nurminen suffered a career-threatening knee injury before the
season.

Garnett was 0-2-0 while allowing 6.34 goals per game as a
fill-in starter in his first three NHL games.

The 33-year-old Shields was 1-1-0 with a 1.47 goals-against
average and .929 save percentage in two games with Chicago of the
American Hockey League this season.

Shields has a 79-102-39 record with 10 shutouts in nine seasons
with Buffalo, San Jose, Anaheim, Boston and Florida from 1995-2004.
