MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Memphis coach John Calipari dismissed
guard Jeremy Hunt from the Tigers on Tuesday for violating team
policy and an agreement with the university.
Hunt was suspended indefinitely from the team after an incident
on Beale Street on Sept. 18. At about the same time, Hunt broke his
hand in what he said was an accident during shooting practice.
"I think the university and I have gone out of our way to give
Jeremy every chance to be a part of this program, but we can not
allow his actions to continue to be an ongoing distraction for this
team," Calipari said.
Hunt was charged with domestic assault Jan. 10 after an
ex-girlfriend told authorities that he came to her home and beat
her. He later agreed to an order of protection barring the two from
any contact and from carrying a firearm.
Hunt met with Calipari and athletic director R.C. Johnson on
Tuesday.
"Jeremy knew he had very little room for error after last
year's incident," Johnson said. "I believe that he was given more
than his fair share of opportunities to be a part of our basketball
team."
Hunt had a career-high 24 points against Northeastern in the
2005 NIT and averaged 9.5 points in 66 games.
Calipari said Hunt will stay in school and finish his degree.
