A daily glance inside the numbers from the world of sports:

Major League Baseball

Chris Carpenter got the win in the Cardinals' 6-1 victory over the Marlins on Monday. Since June 14, Carpenter is undefeated in 14 starts and has gone at least seven innings, allowing no more than three earned runs in any of those starts. In the live-ball era (1920 to date), the only other major-league pitcher with such a streak was Gaylord Perry, who had 15 consecutive starts like that for the 1974 Indians.

• The Cardinals have a 15-game lead in the National League Central. Last season, the Cards built a 17½-game lead before finishing 13 games in front. Five other teams in major-league history have had a 15-game lead in their league or division in consecutive seasons: the 2002-03 Braves, 1969-70 Orioles, 1943-44 Cardinals, 1938-39 Yankees and 1906-07 Cubs.
