Red Wings sign D Delmore, retain C Williams, RW Bootland

DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings have found a competent
point man for their power-play unit.

On Tuesday, the Red Wings signed defenseman Andy Delmore, who
had been with the Buffalo Sabres, to a one-year contract.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but Delmore made $1 million
with the Sabres in 2003-04.

The 28-year-old Delmore managed just two goals and five assists
in 37 games in his only year with Buffalo but had 34 goals and
38 assists over the previous two seasons with Nashville. Of his
43 career tallies, 29 have come on the power play, including 14
to lead all NHL defensemen in 2002-03.

The 6-1, 200-pound Delmore spent last season in Germany, where
he posted seven goals and 16 assists in 50 games for
Adler-Mannheim. In 276 career NHL contests with Philadelphia,
Nashville and Buffalo, he has recorded 103 points.

Also on Tuesday, the Red Wings re-signed right wing Darryl
Bootland to a one-year deal and announced center Jason Williams
accepted his one-year qualifying offer.

Bootland, 23, registered one goal, one assist and 74 penalty
minutes in 22 games as a rookie with Detroit in 2003-04.

The 25-year-old Williams has recorded 17 goals and 15 assists in
94 NHL games with the Red Wings. Williams, who was a member of
Detroit's Stanley Cup-winning team in 2002, appeared in a
career-high 49 games in 2003-04, producing six goals and seven
assists.

Last season, the 5-11, 185-pound Williams played 43 games with
Assat Pori and recorded 26 goals and 17 assists to rank 11th in
the Finnish League in scoring.
