Police busy along Interstate 80 during rally

RENO, Nev. -- It cost celebrities $13,000 to enter the Bullrun USA 2005 charity auto rally.

Some of them, including former NBA star Dennis Rodman, will pay a lot more on top of that. More than 20 citations were issued Wednesday to drivers on the run along Interstate 80 from Salt Lake City to Reno.

The eight-day, 3,000-mile event began Friday in Los Angeles. Competitors were on the return portion of the rally and were traveling to San Francisco on Thursday, Nevada Highway Patrol Lt.
Paul Hinen said.

He said he first heard reports of reckless driving about 6 p.m. Wednesday.

"We were receiving reports of speeding well in excess of 100 mph on Interstate 80 from Salt Lake City," he said. "By the time they were approaching Reno, between Winnemucca and Lovelock, our troopers east of here had issued more than 20 citations, all for reckless driving.

"As they got close to Reno, the reports were about them slowing
and blocking traffic and then speeding up, two cars running side by
side, someone trying to jump from one car to another, passing beer
bottles between cars and throwing beer bottles at other cars."

Former Chicago Bulls and Detroit Pistons star Rodman was in a
minor crash and was ticketed twice Tuesday in his Lamborghini along
Interstate 70 in Colorado en route to Salt Lake City.

Rodman's driver and bodyguard, Joey Hinojoza, was given a $237
speeding ticket Wednesday in Elko County, Nev.

"Dennis' people will pay it," Hinojoza said.

The Bullrun is a one-week race for charities that started in Los
Angeles and had stops overnight in Las Vegas; Telluride, Colo.;
Boulder, Colo.; and Salt Lake City.
