Peavy, Padres look to snap eight-game skid

SAN DIEGO - Jake Peavy looks to rebound from his worst
outing of the season and the San Diego Padres hope to snap a
season-high eight-game losing streak when they host the St.
Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.

Peavy (8-4, 3.42 ERA) surrendered a season-high seven runs in
five innings of Thursday's 12-0 loss to the New York Mets. Over
his last five starts, Peavy has yielded 20 runs in 28 2/3
innings.

The All-Star righthander has not faced St. Louis this year. He
is 0-2 lifetime against the defending National League champions.

The Cardinals counter with Jason Marquis (9-7, 3.88), who has
notched just one win since June 10. Marquis lasted just four
innings against Milwaukee on Thursday, allowing seven runs -
three earned - and nine hits in a 12-7 loss.

Marquis is 1-4 with a 5.13 ERA in his last seven starts. The
righthander is 2-1 lifetime against the Padres.

The Cardinals posted a 4-2 victory in Tuesday's series opener.
Mark Mulder recorded his fourth consecutive win while rookie
John Gall collected two hits in his major league debut.

The Padres have scored just 14 runs during their skid. Despite
falling to .500 for the first time since May 4, San Diego still
holds a three-game lead in the National League West Division
over Arizona.
