Acharya defends women's amateur title

HELENA -- Jasi Acharya of Columbus defended her Montana
State Women's Golf Amateur title after shooting 3-under-par 70 in
the final round Thursday.

Acharya, a golfer at the University of Montana, finished with a
three-day score 219, one stroke better than second-day leader Darah
Newell of Helena.

Acharya gained the lead on the back nine after tying Newell on
hole No. 12. She took a one-stroke lead after the 13th hole and
built a two-stroke lead after a birdie putt on No. 16.

Devon Newell shot a 77 on Thursday and finished the tournament
at 224.

Rachel Warren of Billings, who led after the first round,
finished in fourth place after shooting a 79 Thursday for a final
score of 228.

Mickey Moret of Bozeman won the senior amateur with a 248,
followed by Marilyn Aberle of Helena at 250 and Karen Kershaw of
Bigfork at 256.
