Thursday's British Open at a glance

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland -- A glance at Thursday's opening
round of the British Open on the Old Course at St. Andrews.

^Leading: Tiger Woods, who shot a 6-under-par 66 to take a one
stroke lead over Mark Hensby.

^Just behind: A bunch of players were in contention, with 10
players at 68 and another eight at 69.

^Surprising: Scottish amateur Eric Ramsay was just hoping not to
embarrass himself after making his first Open. He did even better
than that by shooting a 68 in his opening round.

^Jack's round: Jack Nicklaus played before adoring crowds, but
he wasn't as happy with his golf game. He made three straight
bogeys on the back nine for an opening 75 in his 164th and last
major championship.

^Defending champion: Todd Hamilton's defense began shakily with
an opening 74 that left him in danger of missing the cut.

^Shots of the day: Nick O'Hern hit out of the Road Hole bunker
to within two inches. Steven Webster hit next and blasted out to
about four inches.

^Duval's struggles: David Duval, who won the Open in 2001,
continued his recent struggles, shooting an 80 that included two
double bogeys on the back nine.

^Quoteworthy: "People are scared to say it but its true. If
he's playing well, we're all playing for second." -- Mark Hensby on
Tiger Woods
