UPDATE 1-Cycling-Vinokourov wins tough stage after breakaway

BRIANCON, France, July 13 - Kazakh Alexander
Vinokourov won Wednesday's mountainous 11th stage of the Tour de
France after a superb breakaway ride.

Vinokourov, whose hopes for overall victory were all but
shattered when he struggled in Tuesday's first stage in the
Alps, showed his fighting spirit on the 173-km ride from
Courchevel.

Either as part of a group or riding alone, the T-Mobile
rider climbed the day's three challenging mountain passes, the
Madeleine, the Telegraphe and the Galibier, in front.

He narrowly outsprinted Colombian Santiago Botero to the
finish.

The pack crossed the line a little over a minute later,
Frenchman Christophe Moreau winning the sprint for third place.

Lance Armstrong retained the race leader's yellow jersey he
had recaptured with a commanding performance on Tuesday.

The American, chasing an unprecedented seventh Tour win,
came in with the pack.
