GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas -- Goosey Moose defended his title in the $125,000 Assault Stakes at Lone Star Park on Saturday, when he rallied for a length win over Agrivating General.
The 1 1/16-mile race was one of six restricted stakes worth a cumulative $575,000 on the annual Stars of Texas Day program.
Goosey Moose ($4.80) settled in fourth as Blinding Prospect and Lights on Broadway raced as a team through early fractions of 24.43 seconds and 48.19. The eventual winner moved up on the backstretch, launched a strong bid midway on the final turn, and went on to cover the distance in 1:44.26.
Roman Chapa rode the winner for Danny Pish. Goosey Moose races in the name of Wilton Scott, who died last week, said Pish.
Calhoun saddles the superfecta
Trainer Bret Calhoun accounted for the superfecta in the $125,000 fillies division of the Texas Stallion Stakes when his runners, led by winner Final Trick, finished first through fourth in the 5 1/2-furlong race, all racing as separate betting interests. Cats Legend was 1 1/2 lengths back in second, while it was another 1 1/4 lengths to third-place finisher Sauternes.
Dyna's Gold Legend was a half-length behind Sauternes in fourth to round out the 5-6-4-1 superfecta, which paid $1,337.
"They're all four very, very nice fillies," said Calhoun.
Final Trick ($11.60) settled in fifth early, moved to the outside of horses in the stretch, and ran down the leaders, covering the distance in 1:04.69.
"We're very pleased with her development," Calhoun said of Final Trick. "She's better today than she has ever been. She has really been on the improve."
Quincy Hamilton rode the winner, who races for Wayne Sanders and Larry Hirsch. Final Trick is a 2-year-old daughter of Magic Cat.
Heiligbrodt, Asmussen win second straight
Paltu gave Heiligbrodt Racing Stable and trainer Steve Asmussen their second straight win in the $125,000 colts and geldings division of the Texas Stallion Stakes when he drew clear by 2 1/4 lengths in the 5 1/2-furlong race. Gambling Wolfe finished second, a neck in front of third-place finisher Fast Fashion.
Paltu ($3.40) covered the distance in 1:04.55.
Roman Chapa rode the winner, who is a 2-year-old son of Hadif. Heiligbrodt Racing and Asmussen won last year's Texas Stallion Stakes with Expect Will.
* Body by Katrina, a 23-1 longshot, kicked three lengths clear of 3-5 favorite Tizzy Girl in the late stages to win the $50,000 Valor Farm Stakes for 3-year-old fillies bred in Texas. Tizzy Girl finished second, three-quarters of a length clear of Texas Spice. Ted Gondron rode the winner for trainer Michael Stidham.
* Lightsnatcher ($8.40) rallied past the leaders in the stretch for a half-length win in the $50,000 Harold V. Goodman Memorial, a 6 1/2-furlong race for 3-year-olds bred in Texas. P F Deco finished second, while it was another 2 3/4 lengths back in third to 1-2 favorite War Bridle. Jamie Theriot rode the winner for trainer Cole Norman.
* Slewpy's Storm ($9.20) recaptured her best form to win the $100,000 Allen Bogan Memorial for fillies and mares bred in Texas. Kevin Cogburn rode the winner for trainer Brent Davidson.
