Americans sweep 400 hurdles

SAINT-DENIS, France -- France's Ladji Doucoure thrilled the home crowd with a win in the 110-meter hurdles Friday at the Gaz de France track meet, beating four-time world champion Allen Johnson and Chinese star Liu Xiang.

Doucoure won in 13.02 seconds, edging Johnson by 0.02. Liu, who shares the world record of 12.91 with Britain's Colin Jackson, was third in 13.06.

In the 100, Aziz Zakari of Ghana beat 2004 champion Francis Obikwelu of Portugal, winning in 10.04. Obikwelu clocked 10.05. Dwight Thomas of Jamaica was third in 10.11, and American Leonard Scott was fourth in 10.13.

Maurice Greene was scheduled to run in the race, but he injured his hamstring last weekend at the U.S. championships and watched from the stands.

In the women's 100, Christine Arron of France won in 11.03. Chandra Sturrup of the Bahamas was second in 11.05, while Olympic silver medalist Lauryn Williams was third in 11.16.

Americans swept the 400 hurdles -- James Carter won the men's race in 48.05 and Lashinda Demus took the women's race in 53.85. Carter won despite bumping runner-up Naman Keita of France.

"Our arms kind of hit each other -- but it was not too bad," Carter said of Keita, who finished in 48.27. Periklis Iakovakis of Greece was third in 48.71.

"I came here to do what I need to do -- run fast -- and I was able to get the victory," Carter said.

American Joanna Hayes, who won gold in Athens and holds the Olympic record, won the women's 100 hurdles in 12.60. Perdita Felicien of Canada was second in 12.66 and Linda Ferga Khodadin of France was third in 12.78.
