Contreras has pressure relieved from bleeding on brain

LOS ANGELES -- Mexican flyweight Ruben Contreras underwent
surgery to relieve pressure from bleeding on his brain Saturday
night after suffering a seizure shortly after he quit during his
bout, ringside physician Dr. Paul Wallace said.
Contreras was taken to California Hospital Medical Center after
he stopped fighting in the sixth round of a scheduled eight-round
bout against Brian Viloria.
Contreras complained of a headache afterward and had a seizure
within five or 10 minutes following the bout, Wallace said.
Bob Arum, who promoted the card, said Contreras came out of
surgery late Saturday night and he wasn't sure how the injury
happened.
"All I know is that he's in critical condition and we think
he'll get through it," Arum said.
Wallace said, "With anything cranial, you're saying it's a
serious matter." The doctor added, however, that the seriousness
of the injury depends on many factors, including the size of the
injury to the brain.
Contreras and Viloria fought on the undercard of the Julio Cesar
Chavez-Ivan Robinson bout at Staples Center.
There were no knockdowns, but Contreras was bleeding from the
nose and mouth.
"Nothing significant happened in that fight," Wallace said.
The 32-year-old Contreras has a 9-17-3 record. Viloria, a
24-year-old from Waipahu, Hawaii, is 17-0, with 10 knockouts.
The victory gives Viloria a bout with Eric Ortiz for the World
Boxing Council junior flyweight world championship in July.
