Red Sox expected to activate and start Wells

Boston (23-16) at Oakland (15-24), 3:35 pm EDT

OAKLAND, California -- The Boston Red Sox activated
lefthander David Wells in the rubber game of a three-game
series against the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday.

It is the first start for Wells (2-3, 4.91 ERA) since he
left an April 25 game with a sprained ankle. He gave up six
runs in 3 2/3 innings in an 8-4 loss to Minnesota.

"I don't see why I can't throw 100 (pitches)," Wells told the
Boston Globe.

Jeremi Gonzalez would have started if Wells was not activated.
Wells' return coincides with Bronson Arroyo opting to start his
six-game suspension for intentionally hitting a batter in a
game last month at Tampa Bay.

The Athletics, who have dropped 12 of their last 14 games, will
give the ball to Seth Etherton (NR). Starting in place of
injured righthander Rich Harden, Etherton will make his first
major league appearance since his stint in 2003 with the
Cincinnati Reds. The 28-year-old righthander was 1-2 with a
2.76 ERA in six games with the Class AAA Sacramento River Cats.

The Red Sox rallied for four runs in the eighth inning in a 7-5
triumph at Oakland on Tuesday.

Edgar Renteria capped Boston's rally when his hit with the bases
loaded skipped past Oakland right fielder Eric Byrnes. The Red
Sox, who managed just four hits in the contest, scored three
runs on the play.
