La Cueva, Albuquerque Academy and St. Michael's win team titles

ALBUQUERQUE -- La Cueva and St. Michael's made it
back-to-back titles at the girls state track and field
championships Saturday, with the Albuquerque Academy girls also
taking home a first place trophy.

All three of the team races in 5A, 4A and 3A were close.

La Cueva used a second place finish in the final event of the
day, the 1,600-meter relay to edge Highland for the girls team
title in 5A.

La Cueva finished with 68 points to Highland's 62. Clovis was
third with 50 1/2 points and Rio Rancho fourth with 45 points.

Albuquerque Academy, led by sophomores Lyndsay Harper and
Lindsey Shepard , scored 92 points. Los Alamos was second with 71
points and 2004 champ Farmington was third with 61 points.

St. Michael's again managed to edge Grants, which also finished
second last year. The Lady Horsemen scored 72 points to Grants' 63.
Bloomfield was third with 57 points. That was the same order of
finish for the top three at the 2004 meet.

Harper, a sophomore, set state records in 800 and 400 meters.
Her time of 2:17.54 in the 800 was just under the previous best of
2:17.62 by another Academy runner, Rachel Urbina, at the 2001 state
meet.

Harper earlier in the day set the 400 meter mark of 58.03
seconds. That eclipsed the previous 4A record of 58.21 by Megan
Bryan of Silver High School in 2001.

Shepard won the 300-meter hurdles (46.08), while Aeriel Emig won
the 1,600-meter run. Emig, a senior, also was a double winner
during the weekend, winning the 3,200 on Friday.

The St. Pius foursome set a state record in the 1,600 relay with
a time of 4:04.74. That broke the previous mark of 4:05.24 by
Piedra Vista in 2004.

Onate set a state record in the 400 relay with a time of 49.73.
The previous best time of 49.84 was set by Farmington in the 2003
meet.

Piedra Vista's Victoria Martin, who set a state record in the
long jump on Friday, came back to win the triple jump Saturday. She
jumped 36-6 1/2, with Hannah Rhoten of St. Pius second (35-7 3/4).

Irena Ossola won two events and Corey Butler and Stephanie Louis
to lead the St. Michael's girls.

Ossola won the 800 meters (2:28.40) and the 1,600 meters, while
Butler won the 300-meter hurdles (48.16) and Louis took the 400
meters (1:00.20).

Ossola nipped Shiprock's Rachelle Billie at the wire of the
1,600. Ossolo hit the finish line in 5:30.72, with Billie timed in
5:30.76.
