Patriots sign LB Chad Brown

FOXBORO, Massachusetts - Uncertain of Tedy Bruschi's
status, the New England Patriots on Wednesday signed three-time
Pro Bowl linebacker Chad Brown.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Brown, 34, was released by the Seattle Seahawks last month for
salary cap purposes. He has missed 19 games over the last three
seasons due to an assortment of injuries.

But Patriots coach Bill Belichick loves to stack up on
linebackers and seized the opportunity to sign Brown, the active
leader among linebackers with 78 sacks.

Bruschi's condition was also a factor. He suffered a mild
stroke in February, making his status uncertain for 2005. The
Patriots also released veteran inside linebacker Roman Phifer in
the offseason.

Brown joins a linebacking corps which features veterans Willie
McGinest, Mike Vrabel, Ted Johnson and Rosevelt Colvin.

A 12-year veteran, Brown started 156 of 163 games with the
Pittsburgh Steelers (1993-96) and Seattle (1997-2004). Brown
was named to the Pro Bowl for the first time in 1996, when he
recorded 13 sacks. He also was named to the Pro Bowl in his
first two years with Seattle.
