Top seed upset in Challenger event

NEW YORK -- Vasilis Mazarakis, who has never won a
tournament since turning professional in 2003, upset top-seeded
Justin Gimelstob, a two-time member of the U.S. Davis Cup team, in
the opening round of the USTA Forest Hills Clay Court Classic on
Monday.

The 25-year-old from Greece beat Gimelstob 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 for his
second win in three matches this year on the Challenger Series.

Gimelstob, 28, of Santa Monica, Calif., won four titles in the
Challenger Series last year. His best showing in a Grand Slam event
was reaching the third round in the U.S. Open in 1997, the year he
turned pro, and at Wimbledon in 2003.

In another first-round match, James Blake, who also played Davis
Cup from 2001-03, routed Hars Uebel of Germany 6-1, 6-2.

The seventh-seeded Blake won the Harrah's Challenger Series
event last week in Tunica, Miss.

Blake, 26, of Tampa, Fla., missed most of last year because of a
fractured vertebra and paralysis in his face.
